Regarding the future development of LCD technology, there has been much debate in the industry. However, with the acceleration of product upgrades, more and more people lean toward replacing LCDs with OLEDs. It's important to clarify that LCDs are not the same as LEDs. What is LED TV technology? LED is not an independent TV display technology but rather an LCD TV with an LED backlight, with the core technology being LCD.
Due to advancements in liquid crystal panel cutting technology, small-screen display devices are typically the first to adopt new display panel technologies. Therefore, the overall development direction of future liquid crystal display devices can often be observed in small-sized displays. Based on the current market situation, Samsung's AMOLED is widely recognized as a next-generation display technology with superior performance. Meanwhile, the rumored IGZO display technology, which Apple is expected to adopt in future iPhones, is also generating anticipation. But what are the differences between these two technologies? What are their advantages and disadvantages?
Let's start with AMOLED. The full name is Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode, which is a type of OLED (Organic Light Emitting Display) technology. OLED involves light emission through carrier injection and recombination, driven by an electric field within organic semiconductor and luminescent materials. The technology uses ITO transparent electrodes and metal electrodes as the device's anode and cathode. When a certain voltage is applied, electrons and holes are injected from the cathode and anode into the electron and hole transport layers, respectively. These carriers migrate to the light-emitting layer, where they meet and form excitons. These excitons excite light-emitting molecules, which emit visible light through radiative relaxation.
AMOLED has several advantages, including faster response speed, higher contrast, and a wider viewing angle. Currently, Samsung Electronics places significant emphasis on this advanced display technology, accounting for 99% of the market share.
