"Nikkei News" reported that Sony Corporation of Japan announced its return to the OLED TV market after leaving for seven years. The company released the BRAVIA brand OLED TV set in Tokyo on Monday and plans to start selling it in Japan next month.
Sony developed the OLED TV prototype in 2001 and launched the world's first home OLED TV set in 2007. However, the sales of only 11-inch cutting-edge products were not as good as expected, and Sony decided to stop selling in 2010. Sony will not develop its own panels when it returns to the market, and will switch to OLED screens manufactured by South Korea's Lejin Display (LGD).
Sony launched 55-inch and 65-inch "BRAVIA A1" series TVs with 4K OLED panels on Monday. It is expected to be launched in Japan on June 10. The target is that the global market share of flat-panel TVs this year will be 8. 5% expanded to more than 10%. The 65-inch BRAVIA A1 TV is priced at about 800,000 yen ($7092), and the 55-inch model is about 500,000 yen.
The OLED panel business of Sony and Panasonic has been merged and will be incorporated into the Japanese display company later this year, so Sony itself no longer has OLED TV panel technology.
