Will AMOLED replace AMLCD?

Since the light-emitting device of the AMOLED is a solid-state OLED, the display composition is solid, so that it can be conveniently made into a flexible display, and can also be made into a wearable and in-vehicle display. Samsung and Apple also announced that they will launch a foldable mobile phone recently, so flexible AMOLED has huge market prospects. However, there is currently no mature technical team and technical route, and its industrialization still needs to wait and see.

The AMOLED display screen is not perfect, and its RGB pixel life cycle is different. Therefore, as the usage time increases, color drift may occur, and the LCD does not have such a problem. Although AMOLED has a place in the field of small and medium-sized mobile phones, watches, etc., there are still technical problems in the application of large-sized tablets and televisions. This is because OLEDs are current-type devices, and the amount of current flowing through the OLED determines the brightness. However, due to the drift or spatial mismatch of the driving device (TFT) and the light-emitting device OLED under long-term electrical stress, the current flowing through the OLED at the same data voltage at different times or at different positions may be caused. Differently, this will result in uneven display and even display errors. For small and medium-sized AMOLED displays, Samsung and Sharp currently use an intra-pixel compensation scheme, which ensures that the current flowing through the OLED can remain almost unchanged when the electrical characteristics of the TFT and OLED change. However, due to the influence of the driving speed and the unevenness of the electrical characteristics of the TFT and the OLED in the large-area panel in time or space, the compensation effect of the intra-pixel compensation scheme in the large-size AMOLED display is not satisfactory. At present, LG has also proposed a peripheral compensation scheme for large-size AMOLED displays, and also gives a 55-inch AMOLED display prototype, but due to manufacturing costs, mass production still takes time. LCD has a mature production line and low cost. AMOLED is in the stage of market transformation. Whether the major panel manufacturers are willing to spend a lot of money to follow up the technology and production line is still unknown. It is worth mentioning that the quantum dot display technology that has appeared in the past two years can be used to improve the quality of backlights in AMLCDs. This is also used in high-end LCD display panels, making AMLCD defenders in this absence. In the war of smoke, it seems that I saw the dawn of victory. The contest between AMLCD and AMOLED is also more confusing.

At present, AMLCD and AMOLED have their own advantages and disadvantages. With the continuous optimization of LCD technology and the continuous improvement of AMOLED technology, the gap between LCD and AMOLED will be reduced on high-end mobile phones. However, the advantages of AMOLED screen in power consumption, thickness and display effect are gradually becoming prominent, and the cost is gradually decreasing, so it is more likely to become the future of mobile phone display screen. However, there are still many problems in the technology of large size and flexible display, and the marketization is far away. Whether AMOLED will eventually replace AMLCD is still open to question, and it needs to be tested by the market.
