According to related news, Apple has selected LG Display (LGD) as the second largest flexible OLED panel supplier for its iPhone smartphone.
Previously, Samsung Display (Samsung Display) has been the sole supplier of the smartphone manufacturer (Apple) OLED display. For the first time in 2017, Apple adopted an OLED screen for its flagship iPhone X model.
With the implementation of the latest initiatives, LGD may expand its foothold in the field of mobile OLEDs, or will sign supply agreements with other smartphone manufacturers including Huawei, Xiaomi and Oppo. According to sources, LGD's sixth-generation flexible OLED panel recently passed a series of quality tests from Apple. In addition, the display company (LGD) is preparing to begin mass production of OLED panels on two production lines at its E6 plant, which have only recently begun to operate. At the same time, LGD's current operating plant also includes the E5 OLED factory, but the plant is mainly used for research and development projects.
The entry of LGD into the Apple supply chain may pose a significant challenge to Samsung's display, as Samsung Display currently controls 95% of the global OLED market.
On the other hand, this diversification will help Apple reduce the production cost of its iPhone with OLED screen. The iPhone X starts at $999 and can be up to $1,149. The latest iPhone XS and XS MAX, released last week, are priced at $999 and $1,099, respectively.
According to market research firm IHS Markit, the 5.8-inch iPhone X comes with a flexible OLED screen costing $110, making it the most expensive part of the phone. The total cost of the iPhone X material is $370.25.
