The price of OLED panels for TVS fell again due to increased production by South Korea's LG Display(LGD). The price of OLED panels for TELEVISIONS rose for the first time in about three years in the april-June period as demand from the home economy boosted sales of OLED TVS, the Nikkei daily reported Wednesday.
Panel and TV makers usually negotiate quarterly to set prices. The wholesale price of 65-inch OLED TV panels, a benchmark product, fell 3 percent (down $25) from the previous quarter to around $840, while the 55-inch panel with the largest circulation fell 3 percent (down $15) to around $500.
LGD's 8.5-generation plant in Guangzhou, China, is ramped up production to 90,000 units per month from 60,000. The operating rate of LGD OLED panels has remained above 90 percent in the July-September period, including the south Korean plant.
The report said OLED panel prices are likely to fall further if the overall TV market shrinks due to slowing demand in the global home economy and a decline in TV sales.
Japanese media reported recently, The Japanese Electronic Information Technology Industry Association (JEITA) released statistics on September 22 pointed out that due to the "household economy demand" pause, the Japanese domestic shipments of thin TV in August 2021 (including 4K TV, OLED TV) decreased by 28.9% to 359,000 units compared with the same month last year. Monthly shipments contracted for the second month in a row, hitting a new low in a year and four months (352,000 units in April 2020).
Japan's OLED TV shipments in August fell 28.9 percent from the same month last year to 35,000 units, the first contraction since April 2018 when monthly OLED TV shipments began to be released.
