LG Display employees remove plastic compounds from old LCD TVs on May 13
LG Display shipped 15,000 OLED panels in the first quarter of 2021. By producing OLED panels instead of LCD panels, it has reduced plastic consumption by 71,550 tonnes.
Because the company consumes less plastic, it also emits less harmful substances. According to the company's analysis, OLED TV panels reduce emissions of volatile organic compounds, which can cause atopic diseases and other new home syndromes, by more than 50 percent compared to LCD TV panels.
Because OLED panels emit fewer harmful substances, it's easier to recycle their parts than LCD panels. LG Display said the product recovery rate for OLED TV panels was 92.2 percent, 20 percentage points higher than for LCD TV panels. The company uses recycled iron as the material for OLED panel parts.
LG Display launched the Eco Index in 2019, which is a measure to assess recovery rates and check whether hazardous substances are being used. LG Display introduced the index to strengthen environmental, social and governance (ESG) management.
The ESG management of LG Display has been recognized by foreign evaluation agencies. In April, the display giant won the top leadership A award in the Global Sustainability Assessment of Outstanding Companies in Climate Change Response and Water Management announced by CDP. The company reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 39% in 2020 compared to 2014.
