LG Display is currently moving some OLED production equipment from its E5 production line in gumi, South Korea, to its plant in paju, according to TheElec.
Sources said the company is moving some of its tensioners, which are used in the production process, to its E6-4 production line at its P10 plant in Paju.
The tensioner is used in the production of the 6th generation (1500x1850mm) OLED panel. It is used to pull and hold fine metal masks used to align red, green and blue organic materials during deposition.
It is rare for production equipment currently in use to be moved to another line, sources said.
Because the equipment may be damaged during transportation, it also needs to be strictly calibrated for the production line.
LG Display may do so in preparation for mass production of OLED panels planned for Apple's future iPad models, they said.
The company had been planning to produce panels on its E6-4 production line. Panels need high resolution, which requires multiple tensioners to achieve.
The move will allow LG Display to save costs by using its existing tensioner.
